VATICAN CITY, April 25, 2025 — Preparations have begun for the sealing of Pope Francis’ coffin, a traditional ritual ahead of his state funeral on Saturday, as thousands continue to pay their respects at St. Peter’s Basilica. Presiding over the solemn ceremony is Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Roman Church, with senior Vatican officials and cardinals in attendance.
India’s President Droupadi Murmu is among the dignitaries who will be present at the funeral, representing the Indian government and offering condolences on behalf of the Indian people.
Over 50,000 Pay Tribute as Sealing Ceremony BeginsThe Vatican Basilica opened to the public on Wednesday, drawing over 50,000 mourners within 24 hours. The Basilica remained open into early Thursday, with the coffin of Pope Francis placed before the Confession Altar.
The sealing ritual will include several senior clerics, such as Cardinals Giovanni Battista Re, Pietro Parolin, and Roger Mahony, alongside Archbishops Edgar Peña Parra and Diego Ravelli, among others.
India’s Two-Day Representation in VaticanPresident Murmu will stay in Vatican City on April 25 and 26, participating in both the viewing at St. Peter’s Basilica and the funeral ceremony at St. Peter’s Square. India’s Ministry of External Affairs confirmed her visit, stating she will offer prayers and condolences during the final rites of the late pontiff.
This visit underlines India’s respect for Pope Francis, who was widely regarded as a symbol of humility and spiritual leadership.
World Leaders to Attend FuneralThe Vatican has confirmed the attendance of over 130 international delegations, including 50 heads of state and 10 monarchs. Notable attendees include U.S. President Donald Trump, Prince William of the UK, French President Emmanuel Macron, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain, and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
India Declares National Mourning on April 26To honor the legacy of Pope Francis, India will observe a day of national mourning on April 26. The Home Ministry has announced that all government buildings will fly the national flag at half-mast, and no official celebrations or entertainment will take place.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier expressed heartfelt condolences, calling Pope Francis a “global symbol of compassion, humility, and spiritual strength.” Modi acknowledged the Pope’s lifelong commitment to the service of the poor, marginalized, and suffering.
