US President Donald Trump has hailed a fresh legal victory in his long-running fraud case, using his latest social media post to brand New York Attorney General Letitia James “a criminal who should be forced to resign.”
Writing on Truth Social in the early hours of Friday, the president said the ruling by a five-judge panel was “a big win today against the totally corrupt and incompetent New York State Attorney General, Leticia James, and her equally incompetent, hand picked, New York State Judge.”
He added that the unanimous decision by the Appellate Division “helps greatly to save the status and reputation of the New York Judicial System .”
The remarks followed Thursday’s appeals court decision , which threw out a financial penalty of more than $500 million against Trump and his two eldest sons, while leaving in place non-monetary penalties, including temporary bans on their ability to run companies in New York.
As reported by news sagency AP, the court upheld a finding that Trump had exaggerated his wealth, but ruled that the vast monetary punishment ordered by Judge Arthur Engoron was excessive.
Engoron had initially imposed a $355 million fine that rose above $500 million with interest.
Trump had delayed payment by posting a $175 million bond while the case was under appeal.
According to BBC, the court left in place other penalties, including a temporary ban preventing Trump and his sons from running companies in New York.
Trump had earlier described the outcome as “Total victory,” insisting the case was a political witch hunt designed to damage him ahead of elections. He also accused both James and Engoron of pursuing him for political reasons, claims he repeated in his posts.
In contrast, James welcomed parts of the ruling, noting that the court “affirmed the well-supported finding” that Trump, his company and his children had committed fraud. She vowed to appeal the financial aspect of the judgment to New York’s highest court.
The appeals panel’s 323-page ruling showed deep divisions among the judges, with some agreeing that James had acted within her powers, while others argued the lawsuit should never have been brought. One judge, David Friedman, wrote that the case appeared more about “political hygiene” than financial accountability.
Trump, meanwhile, said the decision underscored his long-standing claim of being targeted by political opponents.
