Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died at the age of 28 in a car accident in northern Spain, according to Spanish police and multiple media reports. His 26-year-old brother, André Silva , also a professional footballer, was killed in the crash.
The Spanish Civil Guard confirmed to the Associated Press that the fatal accident occurred near the western city of Zamora. Authorities say the vehicle, a Lamborghini, veered off the A-52 motorway in the early hours of Thursday and burst into flames. No other vehicles were involved.
According to Marca, the crash happened near Sanabria, in the Zamora province, at kilometre 65 of the A-52. Witnesses told emergency services that the car was engulfed in flames, with fire spreading to surrounding vegetation.
Daily Mail reported that the luxury sports car's tyre is believed to have blown out while overtaking, causing the vehicle to roll before catching fire. The tragedy comes just two weeks after Jota had married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children.
Both men died at the scene, police confirmed, and an investigation into the precise cause of the crash is ongoing.
