Arguably one of the most infamous scenes in film history is the moment the Grady twins appear in the hallway to haunt Danny Torrance in the 1980 horror film The Shining. Even though the twins - played by Lisa and Louise Burns - only appeared in the horror flick for one scene, their presence had a lasting impact on viewers across the globe.
Now, nearly 45 years after the film was released, the Grady twins have been sharing updates with fans on Facebook through their account the Shining Twins. And while they still look identical to each other, the look worlds apart from their movie debut. With a dream breakout role like The Shining, it seemed like the Burns twins had a golden ticket for a career on the big screen.
However, the dynamic duo opted to take a different career path away from all the movie magic. In an interview with in 2015, Lisa revealed that she decided to become a lawyer while Louise is now a published scientist.
When asked about their experience on the set of The Shining, they confessed they loved working on it. She told the outlet: "Every day felt like we'd been invited to a very exclusive party, and we were the youngest, luckiest people to be there.
"Stanley [Kubrick] wanted us on set every single day, so between scenes we would play with Danny and Jack [Nicholson]." They recalled fond memories working with the Hollywood legends and revealed that Nicholson was a stark contrast from his character Jack Torrence.
When the cameras stopped rolling, he dropped the creepy persona and even acted as a father figure to the girls at the time. Even though they were 11 years old when they shot the film, the experience has stayed with them throughout their adulthood.
The pair have remained active in the horror-fan community and regularly attend conventions and post on their social media accounts about the popular movie genre. In November, they shared a post on their joint Facebook account at a screening for the Shine On Documentary.
The documentary was narrated by Martin Sheen and directed by Paul King. The film featured interviews with The Shining's art director Les Tomkins, producer Jan Harlan, and Kubrick's daughter Kathrina. The women also shares a snap at the premiere with Tomkins.
In 2023, they travelled to ComicCon in Northern Ireland for a panel discussion on the film, where they revealed they were cast during an open call. In the original novel written by Stephen King, the Grady girls are eight and 10 years old.
However, the film adaptation changed their characters to be twins, making the scene even more creepy. They also spoke to Kubrick's notorious perfectionism and revealed that he took almost a week to stage the scene where the twins were lying in the hallways covered in blood.
They explained that the costume department only had one set of dresses, meaning they only had one chance to get the shot. They twins also admitted that when they filmed The Shining, they were just hoping for a box office win and could've never imagined the staying power it had.
Since its release, the hallway scene has been parodied and references several times over the last four-and-a-half decades. In 2015, The Angry Birds movie referenced the twins when the main character opens a door to reveal two green Angry Birds in the same costume as the Grady Twins.
Family Guy also parodied the scene multiple times on the show, including an episode where Stewie Griffin runs over the twins with his tricycle. The Simpsons even dedicated an entire episode to parody the film.
The scene had defined Halloween costumes, with tutorials all over Pinterest and YouTube explaining how viewers can recreate the look for themselves. Even though they've moved out of the spotlight, the original Grady girls have inspired countless recreations and parodies of the infamous horror film.
