Sky Sports issue apology to Salah and Van Dijk during Liverpool trophy celebrations

Van Dijk held the trophy aloft , singing You Never Walk Alone and lapping up their triumphant campaign with supporters. The captain and Salah were at the heart of the celebrations, only to be dragged away from their team-mates and fans to talk with the broadcaster.

Cates had previously asked Salah if he was willing to speak to Sky, only to be informed that he had other duties to take care of before conducting an interview.

When he returned, alongside Van Dijk, Cates began by saying: "Thank you so much for coming over to talk with us, apologies for dragging you away from these incredible scenes. Virgil thank you so much, congratulations."

After being asked what it meant to the Egyptian to hold the trophy in the air, he replied: "It's incredible, last time we didn't have a chance to do it in front of the Kop [due to Covid restrictions], today we had a chance and it is an incredible feeling to win the Premier League for this club.

"I don't think so (heard Anfield so loud), I don't think so, it's a really great feeling to win the second one with the fans, I am really happy."

Van Dijk added: "It's incredible. The moment was against Spurs. It felt like four months ago, but I am very emotional. It's a special day for my wife, for my kids, it's incredible to be champions. No one can take this away.

"I love this club, I love the fans, I love everything it stands for. I am really happy and we will keep going."

Cates and Daniel Sturridge, on punditry duty for the match, then told Salah and Van Dijk to return to the team and their families after taking up their time.

Head coach Arne Slot then went over to the Sky broadcast and said: "It's always special to win something, but at certain clubs maybe a little bit more. I experienced this at Feyenoord where the fans are so passionate, and it's the same and more over here.

"I don't think you expect anything like this. if you look at the Premier League in the last few seasons it was always a race to the end, two or three teams competing to the last day. To be part of it was already nice let alone to win it."

Cates then asked the boss when his attention turns to next season, to which Slot replied: "Probably four weeks ago! It never stops. Even during the season you are looking to the next one.

"The sporting director is more involved in the long term than me but he keeps me involved the whole time, as you can expect. The targets we have now did not come up last week. We've been looking at them for a long time."
