Liverpool could snap up winger Malick Fofana in a bargain deal after seven-time French title winners Lyon were relegated to Ligue 2, following their dire financial situation. The club were provisionally demoted in November but had the chance to demonstrate things had got better.
Yet, the National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG) were unconvinced and confirmed Lyon's relegation on Tuesday. Eagle Football Group, controlled by American businessman John Textor with a 77 percent shareholding in Lyon, had previously announced debts of £422million in October.
Lyon have slammed the relegation verdict as "incomprehensible" and are gearing up to challenge it with an immediate appeal. With the outcome hanging in the balance, many clubs might seize the chance to poach Lyon's top talent, should they leave the top tier - including Liverpool.
Fofana has been connected to Liverpool already this summer, following Sky Sports Switzerland reporting earlier in June that Reds' head scout Barry Hunter holds the 20-year-old in high esteem.
The same report indicates Liverpool's 'genuine interest' in Fofana, yet suggest they need to offload Federico Chiesa first to open up a slot for the young winger. After a challenging spell since moving from Juventus last season where his playing time was limited, Chiesa may be poised for an Italian return this summer.
Fofana's former representatives, BF SportsPartner, have declared that a move to Liverpool would be the player's dream. They revealed to Africafoot earlier this year: "The choice of heart would be Liverpool.
"He has the potential to enter the rotation, and above all, we would like to see him succeed African legends such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and El-Hadji Diouf. He has the profile to succeed in the Premier League.
"He possesses qualities similar to those of Manchester United's Amad Diallo, namely speed, impact, and the ability to create opportunities. There's no doubt he can shine.
"For him, this would be an opportunity to continue his development and, above all, to showcase his talent in a league that favours transitional play. However, he'll have to choose the right club, as competition is fierce across the (English) Channel."
In a significant career move, Fofana recently switched agencies, joining Roc Nation Sports in April. The agency, founded by American rapper Jay-Z, represents several football stars including Vinicius Jr, Gabriel Martinelli, Kevin De Bruyne and Endrick.
