The latest episode of Casualty saw a surge of emotion as Stevie Nash (portrayed by Elinor Lawless) returned to the department post-cancer treatment.
Despite medical advice to extend her rest period, Stevie was adamant about diving back into work. Yet, she found herself overwhelmed when an influx of overdose cases hit the ED, with the drugs in question being tainted.
Although new face Flynn Byron (played by Olly Rix) assured Stevie he'd be by her side for the shift, he was soon drawn away by other crises.
Viewers were quick to echo a common sentiment, questioning the timing of Stevie's return.
One viewer expressed concern on social media, commenting: "Sorry, Stevie. I don't think you're ready at all #Casualty" Another chimed in, saying: "Stevie being thrown into the deep end on Day 1 #Casualty."
Another tweet read: "Poor Stevie rushed off her feet on Day 1" Meanwhile, a different fan posted: "Stevie you shouldn't be back so soon actually I'm glad you are but please look after yourself."
Echoing the sentiment, another person wrote: "Stevie really hasn't been supported back to work at all #casualty." One fan remarked: "Poor Stevie. Much too soon to come back to work."
Another viewer shared their empathy, tweeting "My heart breaks for Stevie #casualty" And yet another added: "Tonight's episode is stressful."
In the midst of the drama, fans witnessed Stevie confronting Flynn for abandoning her during her first shift back, though he maintained that she was competent and that he kept a watchful eye on her, reports Wales Online.
As the drama unfolds, it becomes apparent that the duo share a history from their youth. Despite what appears to be a long-standing friendship, when Flynn makes advances towards her, she is far from pleased and promptly rebuffs him.
The actress discussed her much-anticipated return to the BBC show and Stevie's reaction to Flynn's attempted kiss.
Speaking to What to Watch, Elinor said: "I know, it's like, 'dude, read the room and smell the chlorine!' Stevie is very much, 'What are you doing?!' She has seen him do this [in the past] to other women but out of pride she never went there.
"It's a moment where she takes charge and tells him to back off! It's been great working with Olly to find the key to our characters' friendship."
Stevie may have rejected him this time around, but could a budding romance be on the horizon?
Casualty is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
