The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, also known as the Ooty Toy Train, is considered to be the slowest train in India. It runs between Mettupalayam and Udagamandalam (Ooty) and takes about 5 hours to cover a distance of 46 km at a speed of about 9 km per hour. It is about 16 times slower than the fastest trains in the country, but its specialty is that this journey gives the passengers a unique experience of passing through beautiful hill stations like Keller, Coonoor, Wellington, Lovedale, and Fern Hill. Even though this train runs very slowly, its specialty is that the passengers can comfortably enjoy the peaceful and beautiful views on the way.

When did it start being made?
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was first suggested in 1854, but due to the difficult mountainous terrain, its construction could start only in 1891, and it was completed in 1908. This is the only rack railway in the country, which still runs on old steam engines and gives passengers a glimpse of the past. This train operated by the South Railway is still a special experience for people. In 2005, UNESCO gave it the status of a World Heritage Site and recognized it as an extension of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.
What time does the train leave?
There are two types of seats in this train: 72 seats in first class and 100 seats in general class. In view of the increasing crowd of tourists, an additional coach was added in the year 2016. This train departs from Mettupalayam at 7:10 am and reaches Ooty at around 12 noon. On the return, it leaves Ooty at 2 pm and reaches Mettupalayam by 5:30 pm.
