If you are planning to buy an affordable bike next year, then you may have to pay several thousand rupees more than the current price. Given the increasing number of two-wheelers in road accidents, the central government is going to make ABS i.e., anti-lock braking system, mandatory in two-wheelers with all engine capacities from next year. Due to this, the prices of bikes and scooters coming at affordable prices can increase suddenly.
According to the new rule, from January 1, 2026, all two-wheeler manufacturers will have to sell all their two-wheeler models with ABS. At present, ABS is mandatory only in two-wheelers with an engine capacity of more than 125cc. However, there are some 125cc bikes in the market that come with ABS.
Single-channel ABS will have to be given in any case
Let us tell you that from January 1, 2026, bikes and scooters with 100cc engine capacity will also start coming with at least single-channel ABS. Single-channel ABS can be given in the front wheel of these two-wheelers, which will not only improve braking but will also play an important role in reducing road accidents.
What is the problem with normal brakes?
At present, most bikes and scooters come with drum brakes or disc brakes without ABS. Two-wheelers with drum brakes take a lot of time to stop. In such a situation, many accidents happen due to late braking. At the same time, there is a risk of disc locking during panic braking in bikes without ABS. The tires slip due to the disc lock, which leads to accidents. To deal with these problems, the government is now going to make ABS mandatory in all two-wheelers.
How much will the price increase
If we look at the difference in the price of two-wheelers with drum brakes and disc brakes in the market, it is between 3 and 5 thousand rupees. However, if the bike comes with single-channel ABS, the price of the bike can increase by 5-6 thousand rupees. The new rules will affect the companies selling commuter bikes the most in the market. Companies like Hero, Honda, Bajaj and TVS will be most affected by this. Due to the increase in the price of bikes with low engine capacity, sales may decline in the initial phase.
