Punjab Police Busts JeM Module, Arrests Three Linked to Taxi Driver’s Murder
The Punjab Police has achieved a major breakthrough by dismantling a terrorist module linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). Three suspects from Jammu and Kashmir have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping and murder of a taxi driver from Mohali.
Taxi Driver Abducted and KilledAccording to Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav, the arrested men were involved in the abduction and killing of Anil Kumar, a taxi driver from Nayagaon in Mohali. Investigations revealed that the three accused hired a taxi from Kharar town. Shortly after, the driver’s mobile phone went off, raising immediate suspicion.
Police swung into action, forming multiple teams to trace the suspects. The swift operation led to the arrest of all three accused. Authorities also recovered the stolen taxi and a 0.32 bore pistol used in the crime.
Accused Confessed to CrimeDuring interrogation, the suspects confessed to their involvement. They admitted that following an argument with the driver, they shot him and later dumped his body in the Mohali area. A search operation is ongoing to recover the remains.
JeM Links ConfirmedDGP Yadav revealed that one of the accused, Sahil Bashir, was already wanted in a case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Arms Act at PS Kalamabad in Jammu and Kashmir. His brother, Ejaz Ahmad, had earlier been arrested with arms and materials linked to JeM activities. Police have identified both brothers as Over Ground Workers (OGWs) of Jaish-e-Mohammed.
The arrests highlight JeM’s attempts to revive its sleeper cells in Punjab by using local networks and operatives from Jammu and Kashmir. Police officials said the investigation is being expanded to track down other potential associates and handlers of the module.
A Major Success for Punjab PoliceCalling the operation a significant success, DGP Yadav emphasized the state’s commitment to cracking down on terrorism. He said, “This arrest not only solves a sensitive murder case but also dismantles a terror-linked module. Punjab Police will not allow extremist groups to spread their network in the state.”
The case has also drawn attention to the increasing use of Over Ground Workers by terror outfits. OGWs often provide logistical support, shelter, transport, and weapons to active terrorists while maintaining a low profile to avoid detection.
Wider Crackdown on Terror ActivitiesPunjab has witnessed multiple crackdowns on terror modules in recent months, particularly those linked to cross-border networks. The state police, working closely with central agencies, has intensified surveillance to prevent extremist groups from using Punjab as a base for disruptive activities.
The incident also underscores the need for vigilance in the border state, where both criminal networks and terror groups have tried to exploit vulnerabilities. Experts note that targeting taxi drivers and small businesses is often a tactic to spread fear and secure logistics support.
Investigation ContinuesThe three arrested men are currently being interrogated further to gather details about their handlers, weapons supply chains, and potential future plans. Police believe this case may open up leads to larger networks operating between Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.
The search for the victim’s body is still underway, with teams deployed in multiple areas of Mohali. Authorities have assured the family of Anil Kumar that justice will be delivered at the earliest.
