Is it good to put toothpaste on a burn? While working in the kitchen, it is common to burn the skin many times due to hot water, utensils, or touching any hot surface. Now, in most Indian homes, it is advised to apply toothpaste first on burns. It has become a common home remedy in many homes. But is it right to do so? Should toothpaste be applied to burns? Let's know what the experts say about this.
How right is it to do so?
US board-certified hematologist-oncologist Dr Ravi Gupta has shared a video on his Instagram handle regarding the matter. In this video, the doctor explains, 'No matter how small the burn is, toothpaste should not be applied on it at all.'
Dr Ravi Gupta explains that applying toothpaste does give a slight cooling sensation initially, but some chemicals present in it can cause further damage to the skin. This increases the risk of infection at the site of the burn. Apart from this, skin irritation can occur, and sometimes a mark also remains at that place forever. Therefore, avoid applying toothpaste to burns.
What to do next?
Wash with cold water.
Doctors say, if your skin burns, then first of all, wash that part immediately with cold (plain) water for 10 to 15 minutes. This reduces the burning sensation and gives relief to the skin.
Do not apply ice
People often apply ice to burns, but this is not right. Ice can cause further damage to the skin.
Do not apply anything.
Apart from toothpaste, do not apply oil, ghee, or any other household item on burns. These things can increase the burning sensation and hinder the healing of the skin.
Cover with a clean cloth.
Cover the burnt area with a clean cotton cloth to protect it from dust and dirt.
Apart from all this, if the burning sensation is more, blisters have formed or there is a lot of pain, then contact the doctor immediately.
