Lahsun Pyaj In Sawan: The month of Sawan is considered to be of utmost sacred and spiritual significance in Hinduism. This is the time when devotees worship Lord Shiva, fast, and observe restraint. During this time, fasting, worship, and a sattvik lifestyle are given priority. A common question that comes up these days is whether the consumption of garlic and onions is prohibited in Sawan. And if yes, why? This question has been answered very easily by Saint Premanand Ji Maharaj. In a video that went viral on social media recently, he spoke in depth on this subject.

What did Premanand Ji Maharaj say?
Premanand Ji Maharaj clarified that Sawan is not only a time for external fasting, but it is also an occasion for the purification of mind, speech, and behavior. There is a tradition of adopting a sattvik diet in this holy month, and food items like garlic and onion have been placed in the 'Tamoguni', i.e., Tamasik category.
These substances have such properties that increase feelings like laziness, anger, attachment, and desire in a person. All these feelings hinder spiritual practice and spiritual progress. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid them, especially in Sawan.
Is it a sin to eat garlic and onion?
On a question asked by a devotee, Maharaj answered with a smile, “Garlic and onion grow in the same soil in which potatoes grow, but the difference is in their properties, not in taste.” He said that consuming them is not a sin, but it is an obstacle to spiritual practice. Those who are fasting, chanting, reading the Bhagwat, or doing Shiva Sadhna should avoid these tamasic things.
Can garlic and onion ever be eaten?
Premanand ji also clarified that if a person consumes them for medicinal purposes, such as for digestive or heart-related problems, then it can be accepted in limited quantities. But if the purpose is just taste or habit, then it is considered indiscipline.

In devotion, it is not the taste but the feelings that are important. While referring to Vrindavan, Maharaj said that there, very tasty food without garlic and onion is offered to Thakurji and Radharani. This proves that the taste in food does not come only from spices, but dedication, purity and feelings are more important in it.
