Many people consider the discharge of mud coming out of the eyes as a normal and natural process. But it is not right to think like this every time. Many times, this discharge coming out of the eyes indicates a serious eye disease or infection, which people ignore in the beginning. Usually, this mud is seen in the corners of the eyes on waking up in the morning, which is also called sand or matter in common language. It is normal to have a light discharge after deep sleep, but if it is seen continuously, in large quantities, and of unusual color, then it can be a sign of an infection.

What is the normal color of eye discharge?
Usually it is light cream or white. But as soon as its color starts changing, it can be dangerous to take it lightly.
Know what kind of problem there is from the color of the discharge:
Yellow or green discharge: This can be a sign of a viral or bacterial infection like conjunctivitis. In this, the eyes become red and heaviness can be felt along with itching.
The amount of discharge also indicates the danger:
- If the edges of the eyes appear swollen along with the discharge, it could be a condition of blepharitis. Burning and redness are also seen in the eyes.
- Watery discharge from the eyes can also occur due to cold and flu, which is relatively normal.
- If the discharge is thick, sticky, and yellow, it is usually due to a stye (eye pimple).
- Constantly looking at the computer or mobile screen makes the eyes dry, which can increase watery discharge.
- Excessive amount of discharge, itching and redness can be seen from the eyes due to dust or pet allergies.

When should one go to the doctor?
If the mucus coming out of the eyes is of abnormal colour, excessive in quantity, thick and sticky, as well as itching, redness and pain in the eyes, then do not ignore it. This could be a sign of a serious infection or allergy. In such a situation, contact an eye doctor without delay.
