Dr. A Velumani, founder of Thyrocare, shared a sharp observation about the mindset of today’s younger generation in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter). According to him, young people often fall into two categories when it comes to their expectations from their parents:
Freedom + Funding: This group wants complete independence — to live life on their own terms — but also expects financial support to do so. Freedom + Funding + Validation: This group not only wants money and freedom but also seeks constant appreciation, regardless of what they do. He questions whether there’s a third kind beyond these two.
He ends the post with a thought-provoking line — “What is easy to do is not right to do. And what is right to do is not easy to do.” He emphasizes the value of discipline and hard work, pointing out that sweating today brings comfort tomorrow — and if comfort is chosen today, hardship may follow.

One user reflected on how things were different in their time, recalling how they grew up without money or appreciation and had to struggle for both. Another user shared that their “IITian kids” follow a different mindset — they believe parents’ money is for parents to spend on health and comfort, while ensuring their life choices stay aligned with the family's values and responsibilities. Someone else shared a personal story of their daughter who dreamed of studying at Harvard, fought for it on her own, secured scholarships, and only needed help with the application fee, highlighting the power of independence backed by emotional support.

Two kinds in new generation kids, in expectations from parents.

1. I need 100% freedom and needed money for doing whatever I think.
2. Not just money and freedom, I should be appreciated also for whatever I do?
Is there a third kind ?
