Bollywood actress Ishita Dutta, best known for her role in Drishyam, recently opened up about her struggles with postpartum hair loss in a video shared on her social media today (October 12). The new mom revealed that she has been dealing with excessive hair fall ever since the birth of her second child. She mentioned that her doctor suggested her hair fall could be due to a mix of factors, primarily hormonal changes after childbirth.

Seated in her car, Ishita candidly spoke about the physical and emotional challenges women face after pregnancy, pointing out how hormonal shifts can lead to unexpected changes like hair loss. In the clip, Ishita showed a hairbrush filled with hair strands, explaining that she has been losing more hair than ever before.
The actor, who welcomed her second child — a baby girl — in June this year, admitted that the sight of her falling hair left her worried and disheartened. Through her post, Ishita wanted to reassure other new mothers that such struggles are normal and temporary, encouraging them not to lose confidence during this challenging phase.
Earlier, gynaecologist Dr. Anjali Kumar, once explained that postpartum hair fall is extremely common among new mothers and is usually not a cause for concern. She said the condition is primarily driven by hormonal fluctuations after delivery.
During pregnancy, higher estrogen levels help women retain more hair, resulting in thicker and shinier strands. However, after childbirth, estrogen levels suddenly drop, pushing a large number of hair follicles into the shedding phase. This natural cycle, known as telogen effluvium, can cause noticeable hair fall for a few months. Apart from hormones, factors such as blood loss during delivery, vitamin deficiencies, stress, and thyroid imbalance can also make the problem worse.
Preventive measures for hair fall as per expert
Dr. Anjal also recommended a few preventive measures for women facing postpartum hair loss. She advised gentle scalp massages with oils such as coconut or rosemary to stimulate blood circulation, regular washing with sulfate-free shampoos, and avoiding heat styling or tight hairstyles.
She also emphasised the importance of nutrition, eating foods rich in protein, iron, and vitamins like eggs, lentils, leafy greens, and nuts. In addition, new mothers should stay hydrated and, if necessary, get blood tests done to check for deficiencies in iron, vitamin D, and B12. According to her, most women experience regrowth within six to nine months, once hormone levels stabilise.
According to Practo, Dr. Anjali Kumar, a highly experienced obstetrician, gynaecologist, and laparoscopic surgeon from Delhi NCR, has over 29 years of medical experience. She holds MBBS, MD, and advanced training in endoscopy from leading global institutes.
