Delhi is bracing for a spell of heavy rain and thunderstorms on Monday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting a generally cloudy sky throughout the day.

The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to settle around 32 and 25 degrees Celsius, respectively. The forecast indicates that the wet conditions will continue through the week, with moderate showers until September 2, thunderstorms with rain on September 3, and rain or thundershowers on September 4 and 5.

On Sunday, the capital recorded a maximum temperature of 32.1 degrees Celsius, one notch below the season’s average. The minimum stood at 24.5 degrees Celsius, which was two degrees lower than normal for this time of the year. Humidity levels were also on the higher side, with the IMD noting a relative humidity of 74 per cent at 5.30 pm.

The continuing rainfall has had an impact on the Yamuna, which crossed the danger level of 205.33 metres on Sunday morning. With the water rising steadily, there are concerns about flooding in low-lying areas along the riverbanks.

The warning mark for the Yamuna is 204.50 metres, and evacuation of people is triggered once the level breaches 206 metres. Authorities have already set up flood relief camps in vulnerable areas such as Mayur Vihar.

“These tents are set up for living...People living inside their homes near the river will come out and live in these tents when the flood comes,” Ashok, a local resident, told ANI.

Alongside rainfall and flood concerns, air quality in the city remained relatively favourable.

Data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) showed an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 79 at 4 pm on Sunday, placing it in the ‘satisfactory’ category. According to the CPCB, an AQI between 51 and 100 falls in this range, while 101 to 200 is classified as moderate.
