OpenAI has officially made the ChatGPT Go plan free for its Indian users for one year, beginning November 4. The rollout is currently active on the ChatGPT website and Android app, while iOS users will receive the update next week. This free offer will allow users across the country to access advanced AI features without paying the usual subscription fee. The move follows OpenAI’s growing focus on India, one of its largest and fastest-growing markets.

ChatGPT Go, which normally costs around USD 5 (roughly ₹400) per month, sits between the free and Pro versions of ChatGPT. It delivers faster and more capable AI responses, along with extended usage limits that are ten times higher than the basic version. Subscribers can create images, upload files, generate longer conversations, and ask ChatGPT to summarise or analyse documents. The plan also includes memory capabilities, allowing the chatbot to recall previous interactions and offer more personalised answers over time.

India at the centre of OpenAI’s strategy

The decision to make ChatGPT Go free for Indian users reflects OpenAI’s emphasis on expanding access in a market that has rapidly embraced AI tools. India is now OpenAI’s second-largest user base after the United States, with millions relying on ChatGPT for education, business, coding, and creative projects.

According to the company, the initiative is designed to familiarise more Indian users with its AI tools and encourage long-term adoption. It also complements the government’s IndiaAI Mission, which focuses on building AI literacy and supporting innovation across industries. OpenAI said it is working with educational and civic organisations in India to ensure AI access spreads beyond metro cities and into the broader digital ecosystem.

Existing subscribers automatically upgraded

OpenAI confirmed that current ChatGPT Go users in India can be upgraded to the 12-month free plan. Existing subscribers don’t need to cancel or reapply—the free access, as it will be activated for them as part of the new rollout. After the one-year period ends, regular pricing will resume unless the plan is cancelled.

Nick Turley, OpenAI’s Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, said the move aims to make advanced AI tools available to a wider audience. “Ahead of our first DevDay Exchange event in India, we’re making ChatGPT Go freely available for a year to help more people across India easily access and benefit from advanced AI. We’re excited to see the amazing things our users will build, learn, and achieve with these tools,” he said, according to The Indian Express.

The promotion is currently available on web and Android, while iOS users will gain access next week. To claim the offer, users simply need to log in or sign up on the ChatGPT website or mobile app. Once logged in, eligible users can enable ChatGPT Go at no cost.

The ChatGPT Go plan, powered by the latest GPT-5 model, offers smoother responses, faster processing, longer chats, and more accurate results than the basic version. It also supports image generation, file uploads, and content creation for work, study, or personal use.

The launch of the free ChatGPT Go plan also comes as competition in the AI space heats up in India. Earlier this year, Perplexity AI announced a similar offer for Bharti Airtel users, providing one year of complimentary access to its premium tier, Perplexity Pro. With global companies now offering free or subsidised access to AI tools, experts believe India is emerging as a testing ground for large-scale AI adoption.
