Recently, Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone's voice has been selected for Meta AI's voice assistant. The actress's voice will also be heard in the AI assistant of the recently launched Ray Ban Smart Glasses. Users in six countries, including India, will hear Deepika's voice in English.
Deepika Padukone is the first Indian celebrity to lend her voice to Meta AI. However, the voices of many other celebrities have previously been used or imitated for various AI voice technologies and digital assistants.
Amitabh Bachchan has lent his voice to AI.
It's worth noting that Deepika is not the first Indian celebrity to have her voice used for an AI assistant. Before Deepika, veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan lent his voice to Amazon's Alexa voice assistant. Users could hear stories, poems, or weather information in his voice. However, his voice is no longer available on this device.
The voices of Morgan Freeman and Judi Dench have also been used.
Famous for his deep and captivating voice, Morgan Freeman is one of the most sought-after names in the world of AI voice cloning. His voice is popular as a phone assistant or podcast narrator. Veteran actress Judi Dench, who has proven her acting prowess in the James Bond film series, was also chosen for Meta AI.
John Cena and Snoop Dogg also lent their voices to AI.
American rapper Snoop Dogg also lent his voice to the AI platform Speechify. Former wrestler and actor John Cena's voice was chosen for the Meta AI chatbot.
AI speech is also associated with controversies.
The use of voice in AI is not always consensual. There have been several cases where celebrities have protested the cloning of their voices. In 2024, OpenAI used Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson's voice for its chatbot. Johansson threatened legal action, alleging that her voice had been copied without consent, after which OpenAI removed the voice.
Singer Arijit Singh won a lawsuit in 2024 against a company that used his voice for AI. The Bombay High Court deemed it a violation of his "personality rights," setting an important legal precedent for the use of AI in India.
Broadcaster David Attenborough suffered a major setback when it was revealed that his voice had been cloned and used by fraudsters in biased news bulletins in the United States.
