ITR Filing for AY 2025-26: Income Tax Department to Launch Online Forms Soon; Here's What Taxpayers Need to Know

Send Push

The season for filing income tax returns is around the corner, and the Income Tax Department is all set to kickstart the process for Assessment Year 2025-26. According to reliable sources, the department will soon release the online ITR forms, marking the official beginning of the e-filing period.

As in previous years, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is expected to notify the ITR forms and activate the e-filing portal by April 2025 itself. The deadline for filing ITRs for most taxpayers is July 31, 2025.

Form 16 to Be Issued in June

While the portal may open in April, a majority of salaried employees usually begin the filing process by late May or June. The reason? Most companies issue Form 16 — a crucial document that includes total income and TDS (tax deducted at source) — only after the end of May. As per rules, employers are required to distribute Form 16 by June 15 every year.

This document helps salaried taxpayers match the data with the income tax portal and ensures accurate filing.

Faster Refunds Than Ever

One of the most appreciated changes in recent years has been the quick refund process. If your return is verified promptly and no errors are found, refunds are typically processed within 7 to 20 days of filing. Tax experts recommend filing the ITR well before the deadline to maximize the chances of faster refunds.

Pre-Filled ITR Forms Available

To simplify the tax filing process, the Income Tax Department now offers pre-filled ITR forms, especially useful for salaried individuals and small taxpayers. These forms auto-populate data such as income, TDS, and other financial information, helping to minimize human error.

However, taxpayers are advised to cross-verify all pre-filled details before submitting the return. Any discrepancy may lead to processing delays or notices.

Why File Early?

Filing early isn’t just about getting your refund quicker. It also allows ample time to:

  • Review and correct discrepancies in income or tax details

  • Respond to any issues raised by the portal

  • Avoid last-minute technical glitches due to heavy website traffic

Final Note

The ITR filing window for AY 2025-26 is opening soon. Whether you're a salaried individual, business owner, or freelancer, staying prepared with the necessary documents will help ensure smooth, hassle-free tax compliance this year.
